“I think it’s important for an athlete to be involved in numerous sports throughout high school. If an athlete is serious about soccer and plays all year round, then it may give them an advantage over another athlete that is not playing as much. At Twin Valley High School, it is difficult to expect the girls on our team to play competitive all year round because most of the girls are involved in other sports and cannot make the commitment.”

“I feel that it is a great benefit to the players that play competitive club soccer all year. Although I don’t feel that it is absolutely necessary for every player to play at a higher level of soccer for the high school team to be successful, I do believe that the more players on the team that do play competitive club ball will only add to the success of the team.”

“I think it is very important to play soccer out-of-season, if it doesn’t come at the expense of an in-season sport. We have seen a significant increase in club soccer and indoor soccer participation at Schuylkill Valley and we can definitely see the improvement.”

“That all depends on your definition of a successful soccer season. I do not feel the student athletes have to play on a high level club team to have a successful high school season. During my 11 years of coaching, I have had very few players that played on an elite club soccer team year round. It is important in this day and age for athletes to keep in contact with the game, other than playing just the three months of the soccer season. A majority of the players I have coached played in our Berks youth league in the fall. We do not have practices because the girls are involved in other sports, which I encourage. They also have other interests. They just play one game on a Sunday afternoon, enough to keep their skills fresh.
The girls that have played on elite club teams obviously do get more training and more experience at a much higher level. Those players do bring back with them a work ethic and experience that can rub off on the other players to help them improve.
The success of a high school team should not be measured on wins and losses. It is how the players as a team have developed from the start of the season and if the goals set for the team are met. Last year, we won our first county and district title and set a school record for wins, but I would not say it was our first successful season.”
