Adia Mathies is Miss Basketball

Greater Louisville, KY

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

With her typical quiet demeanor and an elusive smile, Adia Mathies accepted the Miss Basketball Trophy from Dave Satterly of the Kentucky Lyons Eye Foundation this morning at Iroquois High School. The award tops off the Lady Raiders' state championship title, won in Bowling Green earlier this month. The Iroquois staff and Lady Raiders teammates showed their pride in their hardworking star. Mathies returned the respect, saying, "I would like to thank my teammates and my coach and my sister." Mathies will wear the No. 1 jersey for the Kentucky Girls' All-Star team in two matchups with the Indiana All-Star team in June. This year's games will be played Saturday, June 13th in Indianapolis and Sunday, June 14th at Bellarmine University in Louisville. The team will be aiming to repeat the 2008 team's sweep of Indiana in both games. "I am so proud of Iroquois and what they've done this year," said Satterly at the presentation. All proceeds from the games, as well as the 2nd Annual Kentucky All-Star Eye Ball will benefit the Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation. "The Kentucky Lyons Eye Foundation provides research for people around the world for glaucoma, cornea transplants, tissue donation. It's a great cause and one of the top research facilities in the world. So when you participate in the all-star game, all those funds do research for eye diseases." Steve Helton of Scott County High School, who will be this year's head coach was also on hand to present the award. His Assistant Coach in the games will be Tommy Adams from Hart County. The rest of the girls' All-Star team will be announced on Friday.
