“I’ve always wanted to play a sport in college and I’ve always wanted to play Division I,” says senior Katie Wiedmar of Mercy Academy. In her four years at Mercy, Katie has played fourteen seasons of sports, including basketball, golf, field hockey, tennis and softball. Playing so many sports has not been easy, but Wiedmar knows how to manage her time.

Wiedmar plays basketball year-round. She has played for Mercy as the shooting guard for four years, making the varsity team as a freshman. The team conditions year-round and plays tournaments and participates in leagues during the summer.

Katie has some serious rituals when playing her sports. Among them:  wearing her black NIKE ankle socks to every game and taking a nap before all of her sports games.

Wiedmar has been rewarded for her consistency in basketball with a number of honors. She was the Most Valuable Player in the Louisville Invitational Tournament this January. She also was invited to represent Kentucky in the 11th Annual Down Under Hoops Classic in Australia.

“The other sports gave me a chance to be with some of my other friends,” says Wiedmar. When she is not playing basketball, she is playing field hockey and golf. Wiedmar has also played field hockey for four years. She made the varsity team as a sophomore and started as a forward on the team. She has consistently been one of the leading scorers on the team.

Golf is Wiedmar’s favorite sport, and another of her four-year runs. She has signed to play golf next year at Eastern Kentucky University. Katie played in the number one spot every year on the team, and was team captain her senior year. She won every nine-hole match she played in her junior and senior years. Her awards have proven her talent as a player, including Region 4 Tournament Medalist Honor for State Qualifier 2007, Individual State Qualifier for three years, and All Jefferson County Tournament Team. She enjoys the fact that golf her one sport that is not team oriented. She enjoys getting away from the team sports for a little bit, but.

“Golf, in the long run, I feel like I’ll be able to play when I’m 70,” says Wiedmar on deciding to play Golf in college. She knows this sport is not as injury prone as the other sports she plays. Wiedmar is excited about playing at EKU next year, and thinks she will study Business/ Marketing Management. That expertise will allow her to go into professional golf management.

Wiedmar also played softball her freshman year and tennis her sophomore year. She is not just involved in sports. She is a part of many extra-curricular activities at Mercy. She is the secretary of the National Honor Society, the president of Health Promotion School of Excellence, a Eucharistic Minister, a Senior Homeroom Representative, a member of Recruitment Team and Peer Leaders, and on the Journalism Staff.

“I have to be organized to know how to get everything done on time,” says Wiedmar, even though she never has a problem getting everything done.

Wiedmar says her parents are very supportive of her. She says her mom has only missed one game because she “locked her keys in the car at the Laundromat.” Katie says she still doesn’t know if that’s true.

Playing many sports has been a struggle, sometimes a challenge. But Wiedmar has done it all, and is ready to live her dream playing golf for a Division I school.
