"There's high school hockey in Kentucky?" That is often the first thing out of people's mouths when they are asked to come to a game. Lakes do not have to freeze to play hockey. Louisville's two ice rinks, Alpine and Iceland, buzz with KHSHL action on Friday nights. Trinity is a solid competitor and made a state championship appearance last season. The Ice Rocks finished second to Lexington Catholic after defeating them for the state title in 2006-07. Kyle Burdorf and Nick Fredrick graduated in 2008 and went on to play in an elite post-high school league called 'Juniors.' A new force to be reckoned with this year is without a doubt Oldham County's club. A first-year team in the league, Oldham County players had on-ice talent and knowledge before they began high school competition, thanks to the fact that many of the players also skate for one of Louisville's two travel hockey programs, Louisville Storm and Stallions. Eastern High School's team has improved greatly since last year. With a strong head coach and smart offensive potential, the Eagles can bring a fast paced game to any and all opponents. It is clear that many on the team have put in their time during the offseason. St. Xavier, a consistently growing team, has been able to integrate talent with on ice endurance and make every game a hard fought one. When the league was organized, eight years ago, St. X was the dominant force. Lately the Tigers are endangered thanks to reduced player numbers. As the Tigers fight to build a reputation of victory, they also learn to work with the players they have. The Fern Creek Tigers know the definition of hard work better than any other team. Conceived only two years ago, the young Tiger team has taught the game to many eager athletes. With their determination to play and hard practice, they fed defeat to Eastern Eagles once this year already. The Tigers are a true representation of the growth and potential of hockey in the Bluegrass. Samantha Woods is a senior player for the Lexington Catholic Knights.
