Dan Utley, the new head golf coach at St. Xavier High School, took over a streak of 13 years in which the Tigers hadn’t lost a single head-to-head match. Marty Donlon retired this year after leading the St. X golf program for 45 years, leaving an amazing record of 1,230 wins against 61 losses.
St. X remains the top team in Jefferson County, lead by sophomore Justin Thomas. Thomas finished fourth in the Kentucky Open this summer, an unusual feat for any high school player, and the St. X team won the prestigious Kentucky Invitational Tournament at Nevel Meade Golf Course last month. Thomas was second in the tournament to medalist Peter Meeks of Marshall County by just one stroke, tying with Lexington Christian’s Hager Collins.
Teams from duPont Manual High School and Christian Academy of Louisville have been gaining on the Tigers in recent years. Manual’s Patrick Davidson and CAL’s Bland Hance are expected to be among the city’s best players this year.
As last year’s State Tournament winner, Marshall County is the team to beat in the State Championships in Bowling Green next month, lead by Meeks and his teammate, Travis Thompson, the defending individual state champion.
On the girls’ side, Jefferson County boasts a real standout in Sacred Heart Academy’s Lindsay Gahm, the only local golfer to finish in the Top 20 at last year’s state tourney in Bowling Green. Her teammate, Mackenzie Moir, is a sophomore with promise who helped Sacred Heart to a fourth-place finish in last year’s state tourney.
While Christian Academy has been strong in recent years and finished fifth in the state in 2007, it lost its top five players to graduation. The Lady Centurions have Amy Leavell, coach Sherry Leavell’s daughter, to lead the squad in her senior season.
North Hardin High School’s Lydia Gumm, just an 8th-grader, is a rising star who finished 11th in last year’s state tournament in individual competition.
