Defending state champs St. X still strong
Boy's soccer preview for this season:
St. Xavier: As defending state champs in last seasons' undefeated finish, Coach Andy Schulten is having to reevaluate his line-up due to many injuries in some key players. Seniors Tyler White (dislocated knee) and Ryan Smith (mononucleosis) could be out for the entire season. Seniors Andrew Estopinal (broken foot), Kyle Richard (mononucleosis) and Zack Stewart (knee injury) should return sometime during the season. Strikers Kevin Bick and Kyle Schickel are healthy and ready to lead the Tigers. Bick and Schikel are both contenders to be KY's Mr. Soccer.
Male: Under the new guidance of Damien Sweeney, the Bulldogs are seen to be a strong team this season. Junior Taylor Hafling is one of the nation's top goalkeepers. Seniors Michael Boone, Chris Pesyan and Ben Miller will all be returning as important players.
Manual: The Crimsons will welcome back senior Tony Wilbar, who was a first-team All-State member last season. Coach Bob Ramsey has said he has one of the state's top goalkeepers with senior Zach Torp.
Oldham County: As the defending Eighth Region champion, Oldham Co. has midfielder Jacob Kemper, first team All-State last season, and forward Sean Parker, honorable All-State last season.
Trinity: The Rocks lost to St. X in the state quarterfinals last season, but welcome back a couple of key players. All-State members Lepe Seetane (first-team) and Sunny Jane (second-team) will help the Rocks make a run at State again this season.
KCD: Last season they finished 13-6-2 and won the All "A" Classic state title. Losing nine starters off of last year's team will be hard to replace, but a few players have another plan in mind. Senior attacker Wesley Ghasem and junior midfielders Daniel Mark and Matt Miller are some of the team's top players.
Atherton: After a 12-5-1 season last year, they are expected travel deep into the 13th District.
Ballard: The Bruins need to replace Jordan Skora (honorable mention All-State last season) and regroup after a 9-11 finish last season.
Bullitt East: They welcome back junior Rob Daugherty, after losing just 2 players off of last year's 11-7-1 team.
Butler: Is looking pleased this season after a 13-3-3 finish and the 11th District Title last season.
Christian Academy: Coach Doug Lucas is looking to Brian Swanson, Jacob Shively, James Boehnlein, and Austin Chitwood to be strong players this season.
Collegiate: After reaching the 7th Region final last season, and finishing 15-5-1, players Layth Masri, Ryan Miller, Charles Edwards, Max Burge and Nathan Web are expected to make great contributions.
DeSales: Welcomes back nine starters, led by seniors Jacob Gregory and Sam Reider and junior Cody Arington.
Eastern: Cody Covert, Eric Shacklette, Ethan Oberhausen, Chris D'Aniello, and Paul Heiniger are leading the team this year, which has 15 seniors. They hope to become the 15th District champion again this year.
Fern Creek: New coach Diane Polley has 6 starters returning this season, led by seniors Anthony Blake, Nino Dalisay and Robin Diaz.
Holy Cross: They are looking to offensive threat Jonathan McGraw to help improve on last season's finish of 4-11-1.
North Oldham: Honorable-mention All-State member Paul Althoff will lead the team, which finished 9-9-3 last season.
St. Francis: Goalkeeper Michael Jonsson will try and improve on this year's finish after a 1-17 season last year.
South Oldham: 15 seniors will hopefully be enough to take South Oldham back to the 8th Region final this year. They lost to Oldham County last season in the 8th Region final.
Whitefield Academy: After finishing 9-8-3 last season, they will try and contend again this season in the 14th District.
