Fall sports have an allure every sports fan can appreciate.
I have something to admit. The fall is my favorite season for high school sports.
Nothing against winter and spring, mind you, but when it comes to sports seasons, you might say I've fallen for fall.
It's more than just the changing of the leaves and the cool temperatures that make me enjoy the fall, though. It's also about what the sports season has to offer.
First there are the sights: the new uniforms, the new shoes, the new coaches and the new athletes. Then there are the crowds in the bleachers, especially the fun-loving students who paint their chests and dress in wacky outfits. Later, as the weather gets cooler, you'll see the fans dressed in jackets, gloves and hats to go along with the frosty breath of the athletes on the field.
Then there are the sounds of fall sports: the pads of football players smashing against each other in a collision, the thud of a spiked volleyball hitting the gym floor, the clang of a ball hitting the back of the field hockey goal, the whistles of referees as well as the whistling of golf clubs as they slice through the air, the silence before the start of a cross country race as everyone awaits the shot of the starter's pistol.
Then there are the boisterous crowds at sporting events between rival schools like Male and Manual, Sacred Heart and Assumption, Pleasure Ridge Park and Butler, Jeffersonville and New Albany and St. Xavier and Trinity.
And how about the smells? The aroma of freshly mowed grass on the fields. The whiff of popcorn and hot dogs from the concession stands. And last, but certainly not least, the unmistakable fragrance that emanates from a football locker room.
To go along with the smells, of course there are the tastes, too: the buttery tang of fresh popcorn, the anticipation of that first bite of hot dog, smothered in your choice of ketchup, mustard and relish, and finally, that first sweet sip of hot chocolate on a cold evening.
Then there are the special season-opening events of the fall. The football bowl games, the Apple Tournament in field hockey, the Louisville Invitational Volleyball Tournament and the Tiger Run in cross country.
This fall there should be no shortage of excitement in the Louisville area.
Here are some of the things to watch for:
Can Trinity win its seventh state football title in eight years? And, can Central win its second in a row?
Will a Louisville-area player win Mr. Football?
Can St. X's soccer team go undefeated for the second year in a row? And can the tigers win their state-record 17th golf title with a new coach?
Will Assumption add another volleyball state title to its trophy case?
And, on the other side of the river...
Will Jeffersonville's football team win its second straight sectional?
Can Charlestown's football team go unbeaten in the regular season again?
Will the Floyd Central boys' tennis team win its 22nd sectional in a row? And, can the Highlanders' volleyball team get back to the Final Four?
Will Providence win its 26th sectional volleyball title?
All in all, it should be a great fall. You've got to love it. I know I do.
