Golf teams are ready to "tee off"

Greater Louisville, KY

Tuesday, August 5, 2008

As the golf season gets underway, it is important to take a look at what we can expect from local teams. In Jefferson County, St. Xavier, Christian Academy and Manual are expected to make a good run for Region Six top honors. St. Xavier, who finished third in the state last year, are welcoming back defending regional champion Justin Thomas, a sophomore, and junior David Payne. St. X also has a new coach, Dan Utley, who replaced long-time coach Marty Donlon. CAL finished fifth last year and has three returning golfers. Bland Hance and Matt Jones, seniors, and Rob Clark, a junior, will hit the course again for CAL. DuPont Manual has a new coach as well, Bill Jackson, and senior Patrick Davidson and junior Tim Scott will return to help the Crimsons. Sacred Heart Academy finished fourth in the state last season, and have two golfers returning this season, junior Lindsay Gahm and sophomore Mackenzie Moir. CAL's Lady Centurions lost all five players placing fifth in the state last year. New coach Sherry Leavell's daughter, Amy Leavell, is the only senior on the team. Good luck to all teams this season!
