Beth Haven will Play Ball this Season
Greater Louisville, KY

Late start won't slow down the desire
Matt Wright, 26, was hired to replace Brad Street, Beth Haven's head coach last season. Wright was hired as the offensive coordinator, but was bumped up to head coach last month after Street stepped down.
Wright feels that the late start put him behind the 8 ball. "I was given this position a little late, so I feel like I'm a little behind everybody else in the state," Wright said. "It was tough getting some assistant coaches."
Despite the late start, Beth Haven should be just fine this season with Wright at the helm. Wright played football at Fairdale until he graduated in 2000. He played college ball at Campbellsville University until 2004 when he became a graduate assistant for the team. In 2005, Wright was an assistant coach at Fairdale and again at Henry County from 2006-07.
Beth Haven began district play in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association last season, finishing 5-5 after losing to Holy Cross in the first round of the Class A playoffs 47-6.
25-30 players are expected to come out for the team this year. That isn't bad for a program that small. Senior quarterback Justin Stone looks to lead the team this season and continue what last year's team started.
Wright told the Courier-Journal he would run a spread offense and try to spread out his D due to the team's lack of size.
Beth Haven joins 10 other area schools with new head coaches for the '08 season. The others include: Atherton (Chris Collins), Ballard (Mike Jackson), Bullitt East (Doug Preston), Butler (Scott Carmony), Iroquois (Jeff Norman), Jeffersontown (Gary Weiter), Oldham County (Matt Brown), Pleasure Ridge Park (Jason Stinson), Shawnee (Ravon Patterson) and Western (LaVell Boyd).
Good luck to all the new coaches and their teams! Make sure to pick up the Vype football previews in the July and August issues to learn more on these teams and others.
