If you use your heart and your brain and know yourself, you can control your own destiny
One of my idols has always been Bear Bryant. I have a picture hanging in my office that’s been signed To Steve, Best of Luck, Paul Bear Bryant. I tell two stories about that picture. Story one: He recruited me out of high school.
Story two: I had the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Alabama, who was recruiting one of my players, send me that picture.
Which story is the truth? In my heart, both, but in my brain, only one. I know and you know which one is true, and as long as I can separate the stories, it’s nice to dream.
In Bear Bryant’s office he had a sign saying the Chinese word for crisis is composed of two parts. Once means danger and the other means opportunity.
Be a leader.
A former governor of Massachusetts, working on the campaign trail, stopped by a church barbeque and got in line. He was starving. The woman who was serving gave him one piece of chicken.
“Can I have two pieces?” he asked.
“Sorry, one to a customer,” she replied.
“Do you know who I am? I’m the governor,” he said.
“Do you know who I am? I’m the lady in charge of the chicken. Now move on, mister.”
Take charge.
Be determined.
A young woman asked for an appointment for an interview in a prestigious corporation. She wanted her foot in the door. The secretary, besieged by applications said, “Come back in 10 years.” The young girl replied, “Would morning or afternoon be better?” Be determined.
Make a decision.
A man fell off a cliff and was hanging on. He cried out for help, “Is anybody there?”
A voice was heard saying, “I am here.”
“Who’s there,” called the man.
The voice came back, “It is the Lord, have faith.”
“I do have faith,” said the man.
“Then let loose,” said the Lord.
The fellow thought for a second and then said, “Is anybody else up there? Make a decision.
Take action.
A ship’s captain at sea saw what looked like the lights of another ship. He had his signal man blink, “Change your course 10 degrees south.”
The reply came back, “You change your course 10 degrees north.”
The captain sent another message saying, “I am the Captain, change your course 10 degrees south.”
A message came back, “I’m a Seaman 1st Class, change your course 10 degrees north.”
The Captain, now mad, signaled, “Darn it, I’m on a battleship and I say change your course south.”
The reply, “I’m in a lighthouse and I say change YOUR course north.” Take action.
I hope you have enjoyed these tips on making it in life. In anything you do, use your heart and your brain and know yourself.
