Every summer, amongst all of the training and practices, coaching and competing, there is one thing that brings all of this to a stand-still. The KHSAA dead period, from June 25 to July 9, puts all of the coaching and training at school facilities on hold. In the bylaws, "students may not receive coaching or training from school personnel (either salaried or non salaried) and school facilities, uniforms, nicknames, transportation or equipment shall not be used each year in any KHSAA sanctioned sport or cheerleading squad." In Indiana, the dead period runs from June 30 to July 6. The rules are the same as the KHSAA. This dead period gives a needed rest to the athletes competing all over the area. This period is also the recommended time for families to take their vacations.
