As the new head coach, how are you and your team preparing for the season ahead?
As the new head coach, how are you and your team preparing for the season ahead?
Mike Jackson
Ballard High School
As a new head coach we’re going slow. We’re really having to go back to square one on a lot of things so we’re taking our time, from how do we practice from minute to minute on the practice field. What we have to do as coaches is work on being patient and knowing that things are not going to change overnight, yet at the same time being demanding enough of the kids that they do change. The bigger part of the whole thing is our mental approach to the game as opposed to fire and brimstone. We really have to teach the mention aspect of the game to these kids and a new way of doing things.
Scott Carmony
Butler Traditional High School
The main goal for me as a coach is to get our players to understand about competing and playing a physical brand of football for four quarters. Our goal is to close the enormous gap that existed between us and the teams on our schedule and to change the culture of losing in Butler football (we haven't won a game since September of 2006--17 straight losses). We will prepare in a physical, business-like approach with the commitment to getting better in everything we do. We will ask our players from day one to act like winners and demand they do all the things that winners do to be successful.
Jeff Norman
Iroquois High School
We are hoping to change mentality of the players at Iroquois. The administration has taken several steps to improve things and with their commitment and the dedication of the team I hope we will have a much improved season. The kids have been working really hard and we try to give our kids very positive instruction and in the up coming weeks we hope that will pay dividends for us.
Ravon Patterson
Shawnee High School
We’re taking it one day at a time. We’re hitting the weight room real hard trying to get as strong as we can. We’re going back to fundamentals: blocking, catching, carrying the football and trying to get up to full speed. We’re in the classroom learning the offensive plays, defensive plays and special teams, the whole nine yards. We haven’t proven anything yet. My kids want to win but they have to stay together. We’re stressing team, not individuals. Wherever they are, we want to be together and enjoy each other. We’re too divided right now. We need to come together and become a team.
