How important is height as a criterion in selecting players for a volleyball team?
How important is height as a criterion in selecting players for a volleyball team?
Ron Kordes
Assumption High School
Since the game is played ABOVE a net, height is a crucial in evaluating volleyball players. For attackers and blockers, the higher they can reach the more effective they can be at those positions. It is difficult to play the game at a high level without a certain amount of height. As far as coaches are concerned, height is one of the qualities that we all need but cannot teach. The first question asked by college coaches when recruiting high school players at the net positions are “How tall are they?” and “How high can they touch?”
Ken Garvey
Mercy High School
Height is definitely something all coaches look at. Jumping ability, ball control, quickness and learning to play smart, all have their place in the game. If two players are equal in these areas, the taller player will have an advantage. The rosters of college volleyball teams indicate that height is important.

While I would have to say height is good to have in a few positions, I feel there are other qualities just as, if not more important. Qualities such as coordination, quick feet, jumping ability, good attitude, and solid effort usually find their way on to most teams. A tall player with little speed or coordination becomes more of a hindrance than an asset on the court.
Terri Purichia
Providence High School
Providence is very small school. We have a traditionally strong program, however we have never been blessed with a lot of height. My philosophy as a coach is it’s not always the height, but the athleticism of the player. Having those extra inches is going to help you, but having a strong athlete who can jump well is important in the sport of volleyball. More important than someone who is just tall is someone who has presence at the net. We run complicated quick offense, so having kids who can jump well has worked for us. If I had to pick one or the other, I would rather have the athlete who is really quick and explosive at the net.
