Well Worth It

Talk about a story that puts playoff success in perspective and exactly how spoiled some area HSFB fans truly are, here's a nice piece from DMN about how Mansfield HS had to wait some six decades before logging their first-ever postseason win. Here's more:link--Steve Hunt

What Pressure?

Watching Hebron QB Justin Iwuji play for the first time, without looking at the Hawks' roster, it would be hard to otherwise know that this is his first year starting under center. He has already helped lead Hebron to one playoff win over LD Bell. Could more be forthcoming? Here's a feature on him from Matt Wixon:link--Steve Hunt

More of the Same

Rumors of Celina's demise in Class 3A have been greatly exaggerated. Covered the reigning state champs' playoff opener with Van Alstyne on Friday night at Frisco Memorial and once again, the Bobcats have the look of a contender. As always, they do it on the ground. QB Cody Worrell had four TDs and star runner Troy McCartney added two more. All in all, some six different players found the end zone for Celina in the blowout win of 54-13.
Van Alstyne's QB Jake Willingham is quite the versatile player. Not only does he play under center but he also punts and handles the placekicking duties. They finish the year at 7-4, a mark many teams would gladly have taken at this point in the year.

McNabb's Bold Pick: No. 1 Trinity's 1-and-Done
By: Po1
|
VYPE columnist David McNabb isn't one to make waves just to get attention. So keep that in mind when you peruse his Playoff Pick-It Fence Predictions.
David predicts that Trinity -- No. 1 in the VYPE National, State and Area Rankings -- will lose to Flower Mound Marcus in the first round.
Well done Mr. McNabb...but what do I know -- David beat me by one game in our regular-season Pick-It Fence contest.

Playoff Fever is Rampant
By: gopokes

For some sports fans, Friday could be one of the best days of the year. Ah yes, the start of the high school playoffs. That time of year when the contenders are separated from the pretenders and insert any other tired cliche here. Anyway, no matter what team you follow, this is a great time of the year. Here's a quick primer:link--Steve Hunt

Direct All Rockwall-Heath Calls To...
By: Po1
|
The final regular-season VYPE state football rankings are out and I'm expecting to get some calls from the other side of Lake Ray Hubbard.
Seems that our VYPE pollster left Rockwall-Heath out of the top 10. Well, not EVERY VYPE voter left the Hawks out. Despite pointing out that the Hawks defeated Highland Park to remain undefeated, I was out-voted.
Now where are those other editors' cell phone numbers?

Weekend Observations
By: gopokes
|
Did the Frisco/Frisco Centennial game on Friday. It went to OT and Centennial won 17-14. Frisco led the entire night until Centennial rallied in the fourth to send it to overtime. Here are a few thoughts on both teams:
FRISCO-Several players showed up in their last game. QB Gavin Gray has never been flashy or put up big numbers. But he was rock-solid for the Raccoons. WR Taylor Rippy had a big game in a losing effort as did fellow pass catcher Alphonse Coleman, who might do his best work on the soccer field. One big bright spot for Frisco was freshman RB Carlos Harris, who clearly could get some PT next year.
CENTENNIAL-It's somewhat ironic that the Titans go to the playoffs with star signal caller Ryan Mossakowski out of the lineup. Junior backup Antwan Mitchell has done well in his absence but it will be interesting to see how he can do in the playoffs against Rockwall-Heath, who has some momentum after beating Highland Park to win their district title in their regular season finale. If the Heath/Centennial game comes down to kicking, the Titans could have the edge. That's because Centennial kicker Brenden Grimley has quite a leg.

Rockwall-Heath Takes Down No. 1 Highland Park
By: Po1
|
There will be a new No. 1 in VYPE's Class 4A area football rankings after undefeated Rockwall-Heath knocked off No. 1 Highland Park, 38-31 in overtime.
The win not only gives Heath its first district football title -- snatching it away from the state's No. 2-ranked Scots -- but ended Highland Park's streak of 47 consecutive regular-season wins.
Check back with my Game Day column this morning for more on the many storylines produced in this thriller.
