UGA among finalists for Carver-Columbus LB Jones
Atlanta, Georgia

In the eyes of many, Carver-Columbus linebacker Jarvis Jones is the most coveted player in Georgia in the class of 2009. Earlier this week, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound recruit indicated that he plans to sign a letter of intent in February with Clemson, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Texas or Southern Cal. But the drama surrounding Jones’ recruitment will likely continue over the next five to six months. Carver... More

Morris, a 6-foot-11, 270-pound center/power forward has agreed to the NBA minimum salary, which is about $1.7 million for the two years. The formal announcement of his signing, as well... More
Douglass hires ex-Mundy's Mill football coach Barrow
Atlanta, Georgia

Douglass' three-month search for a new head coach has ended. And ironically, the man they found is the man they beat in the first round of last season's state playoffs – Ken Barrow. Barrow's Mundy's Mill team lost to the Astros 35-21 last November. Now he will take over for Gary Cantrell, who resigned earlier this spring to take an administrative position at the school. Cantrell went 45-20-1 in... More

The McDonough school advanced to the championship game of last weekend's Nike 7-on-7 tournament in Beaverton, Ore., losing to Plant High of Tampa, Fla. Henry County is headed to a similar event this weekend in Hoover, Ala. "It's not really football; it's seven players instead... More

Mill Creek now ready to reload, not to rebuild
Atlanta, Georgia

Mill Creek Hawks Region 7-AAAAA Spring practice dates: May 6-May 17 Last year's record: 7-4, lost in first round of state playoffs Working on: The Hawks return just one starting offensive lineman and one starting linebacker, so competition will be fierce at those positions. Atlanta, Georgia

North Cobb Christian has hired Jackson County offensive coordinator Terence Lott as head football coach. The school will play a mixed varsity schedule with the GHSA for the first time this fall. Assistant athletics director Greg Matta said the school's "start-up" status was a big factor in his decision. "That was a big concern of ours," Matta said. "A lot of times, somebody will come in and use... More

After experiencing three consecutive winning seasons and a long playoff run last fall, Chamblee is facing a bigger challenge for the upcoming season. Parkview's offense well-seasoned, but defense is young
Atlanta, Georgia

Consecutive exits in the first round of the state playoffs are not something the Parkview football program is used to. But that's the current situation in Lilburn after losses to Etowah and Walton the last two seasons. In 2008, the good news is on offense, where nine starters return, including standout running backs Brandon Jacobs and TaRon Squires. Clayton Wilkin and Kalik Barnes will stage a healthy quarterback competition... More
Marist's lines strong, football-wise, 'weaknesses everywhere else'
Atlanta, Georgia

For most teams, an 8-3 season and a trip to the playoffs would be deemed a success. Not so at Marist. It was only the fourth time since coach Alan Chadwick took over the program in 1985 that the War Eagles lost out of the playoffs in the first round, and it was the lowest victory total at Marist since 1993. So the pressure is on as... More
Lowndes football locked, loaded for state title defense
Atlanta, Georgia

There is bad news for all of those football teams wanting to win the 2008 Class AAAAA state championship. Fourteen starters return on offense and defense, and both kickers also return from last season's dominant football team. The defense could be even better after yielding only eight points... More
