Southlake Carroll quarterback David Piland performed well after Kyle Padron’s injury in 2008, but I hear he’s anything but certain to be the Dragons’ starter when the ’09 season starts. VYPE.com/DFW’s David McNabb mentioned this a month ago in his column, and it seems that Piland will leave the spring game still battling Kyle Williamson and Brett Maxie for the starting job.
Perhaps Carroll coach Hal Wasson will go with a rotation of two or even three quarterbacks prior to his district schedule. If so, the Dragons won’t be the only area powerhouse rotating QBs. Allen’s Tom Westerberg has said both Matt Brown and Tucker Carter will see time for the defending 5A state champions.
I’ve also been told that at least one high-profile area quarterback will miss at least one game of the 2009 season due to a disciplinary suspension.
Speaking of Carroll, Todd Wills reported that the Carroll ISD offered the athletic director’s job to Wylie AD Mark Ball. I’ve been told Ball and other potential candidates may have been turned off by what they considered to be less money than the demanding high-profile job required.
Can July VYPE Hot 20 List Predict the Future?
We are preparing a Hot 20 List of the area’s top senior football recruits, and if this list is any indication of which teams will make a run at state, fans of Cedar Hill, DeSoto and Skyline should be excited. The Longhorns and Eagles have placed at least two recruits in the top 20. How many will they place on our web-exclusive bonus top 40? The July magazine will hit free VYPE racks during the first week of July.
Saginaw Solves Sarah “No-Hitter” Mendez
Saginaw denied Azle pitcher Sarah Mendez’s bid for a fifth consecutive no-hitter in their 2-1 win in Game 1 of their Class 4A softball regional final series. Saginaw shortstop Britni Soria ended Mendez’s streak with a home run in the sixth inning.
Diploma Over State Medal
DeSoto senior Skylar White, who has won back-to-back 5A state shot put and discus gold medals, has elected to not compete in next week's state meet. Her reason: she’d rather walk across the stage and receive her diploma at DeSoto’s graduation instead. Teammate Roshunda Pierson will also attend the ceremony rather than make a run at a state 300 hurdles medal.
North Pitcher Goes South -- In a Good Way
If you want to see a crazy delivery, check out McKinney North pitcher Justin Scharf’s sidewinding technique. It brings back memories of former MLB relief pitchers Kent Tekulve and Dan Quisenberry.
While it may not look pretty to some, Scharf’s right arm has been effective. He surrendered just three singles in yesterday’s 2-1 win over Hallsville in a 4A one-game playoff.
Don’t look now, but North appears to be making a stealthy run at a state title that few thought it was capable of.
