KAKE Student Athlete of the Week

Central Kansas, KS

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

It's not too often you see a freshman excel at a varsity level sport. For Valley Center 9th grader Morgan Wedekind, she has made her mark on cross country well before her time. "Whatever sport she's in, she's a tremendous soccer player, basketball player, she puts herself in to whatever she does", said Valley Center cross country coach Lonnie Thiessen.

For someone who's in her first year as a cross country runner Morgan has made an easy transition. "I just try my hardest and work hard", Wedekind said.

Morgan won her second straight varsity race last week, winning the 4K in the Valley Center invitational in a time 15:22. That's a new school record. She's also one of the top ten individual runners in the state. "I want to try and break the record again, and get in better shape than I am now", Wedekind said.

"She's not looking for attention, she's not bragging, she's very good about letting her accomplishments speak for themselves", said Thiessen.

Expect more accomplishments from Morgan as she continues to exceed expectations as a runner.
