As our holiday memories fade in the rearview mirror, this time of year is not only about looking back, but focusing on what's ahead. With 2008 here, what an opportunity we all have to make our lives and the lives around us better. Call it a New Year's resolution if you'd like. Call is a new start or a new set of goals, but for a high school athlete there are tons of opportunities to make a change for the better. Don't think you can? It's not as tough as you might think. Here are a few ideas to get you going. Â Play football? Resolve to get to the weight room a little earlier, or stay a little later. Work out with that certain teammate who's just a little bit stronger, but will help push you that much more. Resolve to cheer on classmates in another sport. The basketball crowds I see that are made up of other athletes are often the best home court advantages. Â Speaking of, this time of year is tailor made for hoops. While my playing days consisted of driveway battles between friends, yours might mean a bit more. So why not try to make the most of it. Here's a thought. Resolve to be more inquisitive. I have never heard a coach or teacher complain their athletes asked too many questions. You might get an opinion you've never considered., or a fresh take on an old lesson. Have an older relative that played the game? Get them off the coach and practice that low-post move you really want to perfect. Or how about giving back? Get the team together on a Saturday morning and visit a local nursing home. A dozen or so smiling faces can work wonders. You know that huge smile your grandparents get when they see you? Same thing., now times that by 12! Â Â Coaches are often creatures of habit, so this might take a bit more work. If you've been wearing that tie ever since YOU were a player, resolve to make a trip to the mall. Just make sure they have one in your team colors. We all know coaches spend a lot of time with their teams, especially during the season. Resolve to make time for those who might get over-looked, or under appreciated. But think outside the box. Flowers don't always work, trust me. All kidding aside, we can all use this new year as a chance to improve ourselves and maybe set a good example for others in the process. Â Whether you play, cheer, coach or simply watch for the entertainment, make a change for the better. You might be surprised what you learn about yourself. Â Â Oh, just one another thing. Make sure to set realistic goals. You'll probably hear some talking head giving this same advice on the news this month, but if your New Year's resolution is to watch less TV, I've already given you a head start.
