Whitbred calls it a career

St. Paul, MN

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

Twenty-nine years into his storied career, Park of Cottage Grove softball coach Charlie Whitebred has submitted his letter of resignation and will call it quits at the end of this season.
Whitbred, who won his 520th game as Wolfpack coach earlier this month, has the most wins of any Class AAA coach in Minnesota.
A 1968 graduate of Park High School, Whitbred has led the Wolfpack -- formerly the Indians -- to 13 state tournament appearances and one championship, earned in 1993. He earned Coach of the Year honors that season, and was named Section coach of the Year 12 times.
No word at this juncture who will replace Whitbred. His longtime assistant, Paul Virgin, left the team to pursue opportunities at East Ridge High School.
Whitbred is 59 years old.
