VYPE Hot 20: Greatest Dynasties No. 8 Ursuline Girls Soccer

High school sports dynasties? The definition can be argued around stadiums and coffee shops across the area, which makes it a great topic for VYPE Hot 20.

What area high school sports programs have earned the reputation as dynasty and can boast the state titles to back it up?

The big high school sports brains at VYPE dusted off the state record books, crunched the numbers and asked around to come up with our VYPE Hot 20 list of area sports dynasties.

We did not go strictly by number of state titles, considering the number of opponents in each sport. And because the Dallas-Fort Worth area is home to more schools and teams than ever, we’ve given more weight to recent accomplishments.

8. Ursuline Girls Soccer

(19 straight state titles)

The Bears won the first TAPPS state soccer title in 1991 and have repeated in each of the next 19 straight years. How dominant are the Ursuline girls? Ask Fort Worth Nolan players who advanced to the TAPPS finals in the last eight straight years only to lose to the Bears.

9. Bishop Lynch Girls Basketball

(26 state titles)

The area’s most successful private school girls hoops program recently won its eight straight TAPPS state girls championship, raising its state title total to 26. Coach Andy Zihlman won his 747th career victory.
 

10. Highland Park Girls Swimming

(9 straight state titles)

In March, Highland Park became the first UIL team to win nine consecutive state swimming and diving championships. The Scots left little doubt as to their dominance, swamping runner-up Montgomery by 85 points.

 

 

11. Highland Park Team Tennis

 

(10 state titles)

The Scots have made 21 straight appearances in the state tournament, winning 10 state championships, including five Class 4A state titles in the last six years.

 
12. Highland Park Boys Golf

(8 state titles)

In 2008, the Scots added an eighth state championship to a resume that includes a state-record streak of seven-straight 4A titles from 2000-2006.

 

13. Garland Football

(4 state titles)

The Owls were the talk of the town with three state championships in four tries in the mid-50s early ‘60s. A state title in 1999 and finals appearance in 2006 put them back on the dynasty map.

 

14. South Oak Cliff Girls Basketball

(4 state titles)

Gary Blair coached the Lady Golden Bears to three state championships in four seasons (1977, 1978, 1980) before turning over the reins to Gary Beveride who won a title in 1985.

 

15. Plano Boys Soccer

(6 state titles)

Nobody dominated soccer in the early ’90s like the Wildcats, winning four state titles in five seasons (1991, 1992, 1993, 1995), then adding a sixth this season. They also finished runner-up in 1996 and won a fifth title in 2000.

 

16. Plano Girls Soccer

(4 state titles)

Nobody dominated soccer in the late ’80s like the Lady Wildcats, winning three state titles (1986, 1988, 1989) in four seasons. Plano added a fourth championship in 1997 and finished second in state in 1987 and 1991.

17. Plano West Girls Soccer

(4 state titles)

The Lady Wolves helped put Plano’s ‘new’ school on the map by winning three straight state titles spanning 2000-2002. Another state championship in 2007 added to their reputation as arguably the area’s top public school soccer program.

 

18. Bishop Lynch Wrestling

(9 state titles)

The Friars recently won their third straight TAPPS state wrestling championship, increasing its dominance to nine titles in 10 years.

 

19. Plano West Team Tennis

(4 state titles)

The area’s best Class 5A tennis program boasts state team tennis titles in 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2006. West finished second in 2003.

 

20. Frisco Boys Swimming

(3 state titles)

Coach Bruce Eubanks has led Frisco to three state Class 4A titles (2005, 2006, 2008) in the last four years. The Raccoons finished second in 2007 and 2009, barely missing out on five straight championships.
