North/Tartan wins second adapted bowling team title

North/Tartan, which won its only other team title in 2007, returned to the championship podium this year. The team of senior John Boland and sophomores Andrew Trepanier, Alex Odegard, and Chris Brandt, combined for 1,796 pins to upset the defending champions from Alexandria. Odegard led his team with 511 pins. The Cardinals of Alexandria were second with a score of 1,782 and the Tigers of Lake City placed third with a score of 1,727.
Spring Lake Park sophomore Beth Lewis-Miles won her first championship in the girls’ singles competition. She finished with a total of 497 after bowling a 268 in her first game and a 229 in her second. Jasmine Gomez, an eighth-grader at Coon Rapids, earned runner-up honors with 489 pins, and Mankato East senior Jessica Zernechel placed third with 479 pins.
In the boys’ singles event, St. Paul Johnson sophomore John Hollerbach claimed his first championship with 524 pins. He had 264 pins in his first game and 260 in his second. Cambridge-Isanti ninth-grader Austin Sprandal was a distant second 494 pins. North/Tartan ninth-grader Joe Grandell rounded out the top three finishers with a score of 474. Junior John Hunter of Mankato West, who won in 2008, placed 37th this year; he finished with 408 pins.
Sophomore Drew Winter and ninth-grader Gideon Hartsell of Alexandria emerged as the top doubles team. It was the first title for both of them, and they finished with 946 pins. Hartsell had 506 and Winter added 440. Junior Jamar Stone and ninth-grader Darius Laney of Minneapolis North Community placed second with a score of 904, and eighth-graders Brandon Melchert and Kendall Olson of St. Peter were third with a score of 894. The defending champions from Austin, ninth-graders Taylor and Josh Stoltz, finished in fourth place with 878 pins.
