Oklahoma Supreme Court Rules on Lawsuit Against OSSAA

Friday, April 3, 2009

Oklahoma City-The State Supreme Court ruled on a lawsuit brought be the parents of a Sallisaw basketball player who was denied a hardship waiver after transferring from Central Sallisaw after an altercation between the parents of the player and school officials. The ruling upholds the OSSAA's decision not to give the player the hardship. It basically boils down to the fact that participating in interscholastic athletics is a privilege not a right. In a statement released by the court they stated that the OSSAA was free to adopt rules that govern their interaction and that they are free to enforce those rules without undue interference by the courts. No one from the family of the player was available for comment. For more on the rules of transferring from schools and the eligibility rules go to the OSSAA website at www.ossaa.com We want to know what you think.
