The Argonia girls completed their second consecutive undefeated regular season back on Feb. 20, but now they've come so much further. Argonia is 25-0 and will open at state on Wednesday against perennial contender Centralia. Last season, the undefeated run ended in the sub-state semifinal against Dexter -- a team they already had beaten twice before. Still, 23-1 made it a season to remember; a cast of freshmen who got plenty of playing team left hope for the future. This season, they made it through sub-state just fine, though the biggest challenge of their season awaits in Hays against Centralia. Argonia certainly can't have more experience than Centralia, a program which has made a 1A state basketball tournament berth an annual rite. However, they do have a few things pointing in their direction. The South Central Border League, of which Argonia is a member, had an undefeated state champion just three seasons ago in 2006-07, South Haven. Also, Argonia's third-year coach Dixie Brewster led her last team at Norwich in the 2002-03 season to a third-place finish at Class 1A state. Brewster's daughter, Ali, a sophomore, one of the team's key freshmen last season, missed the first 14 games of the season. Since her return, Argonia's only gotten better. Their leading scorer, Ashton Stansbury, is also a sophomore. Wednesday could be the beginning of a special run at Argonia. 1A Girls, Wednesday at Hays No. 1 South Gray (25-0) vs. No. 8 Frankfort (20-5) No. 4 Dighton (23-2) vs. No. 5 Southern Coffey Co.
