What a weekend it was for football in the city of Houston.

The headliner of the weekend was The Woodlands’ running back Daniel Lasco, who went wild against Katy High School scoring four touchdowns. The Highlanders defeated Katy 31-27 Friday night, taking the No. 1-ranking in Houston and twelfth nationally by USA Today.

Lasco, who was offered by Houston, Tennessee and Miami last week, rushed for 258 yards on 17 carries.

“After the game, one of the Katy coaches came over and told me that Daniel was the second-leading, single-game rusher ever on a Katy defense,” coach Mark Schmid said. “His speed just destroys angles that defenders take. He gets outside and is just gone. He could be the best ever to come out of The Woodlands.”

So who was the all-time, single-game rusher against Katy? Sealy High School’s Eric Dickerson.

Nimitz quarterback Joshua Huff gave first-year head coach Robert Toomer his first win. The Utah commit rushed for 211 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 150 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-48 win.

University of Houston-commit Jordan Jolly of Elkins High School caught 13 balls for 236 yards and four touchdowns in a 40-34 win over Lamar Consolidated.

On Thursday night, Manvel receiver Saqwan Edwards caught 12 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns against Clear Springs. Edwards stock will be rising after that performance, while currently holding20offers from UTEP and Tulsa.

While the Houston high school scene was busy, Houstonians in college were lighting up scoreboards. Utah quarterback Terrance Cain of North Shore High School threw for over 290 yards in his first game, which resulted in a win against Utah State. Houston’s true freshman Charles Sims of Westbury had six catches for 128 yards and a touchdown against Northwestern State.

Former Clear Lake kicker Dustin Hopkins of Florida State hit a 52-yard and 45-yard field goal against Miami in a loss. Florida State starting defensive back Korey Mangum played at LaMarque, while Miami quarterback A.J. Highsmith was nearly thown into the fire against Florida State. Highsmith went to Hightower.

In abbreviated action against Portland State, Oregon State’s Jacquizz Rodgers had 103 yards rushing and three scores, while James Rodgers had 95 yards receiving and one touchdown.
