Top 2010 Recruit In Texas Is... ...Temple running back Lache Seastrunk. Lache (pronounced "Lake") might seem small at 5-10, 184, but he has 4.4 speed and was a hit at Nike Camp. The junior's TD runs have become YouTube sensations. He recently visited Texas and has attracted heavy interest from college football heavyweights such as OU, Florida, USC, LSU and Miami. TV Anchor's Daughter Can Hoop A local weeknight television anchor's daughter is already receiving interest from women's basketball powers UConn and Texas -- as a freshman. UT Beats OU to QB Commitment Texas won another battle with OU when Houston Second Baptist quarterback Connor Wood committed to the Longhorns Wednesday. The 6-4, 210-pound junior who completed 63 percent of his passes for 2,248 yards and 20 touchdowns with just five interceptions in 2008, also received interest from LSU, Georgia and USC, but was also seriously considering OU and Stanford. 2009's Biggest Rivalry? Could be the Plano West and Coppell baseball programs. Coppell fans are anticipating a breakthrough year thanks to a lineup that includes at least six Division I signees or prospects. Most preseason polls reflect Coppell's talent pool, elevating the Cowboys to No. 1. Those same preseason polls have West ranked just behind Coppell. So some West players and fans would like a little more respect coming off last year's Class 5A state title. You can check out features on both Coppell and West in the upcoming March issue of VYPE. End of UIL Steroids Testing? Look for the University Interscholastic League to end steroids testing of Texas high school athletes in the near future. The nation's economic strains are causing school districts across the state to predict budget shortfalls. The money shortage will cause some teachers and coaches to lose jobs, so it makes sense that the millions needed to fund the steroid testing program will lower it toward the bottom of the priority list. News that Florida will put an end to its steroids testing of high school athletes should help the UIL's explanation to the plan's backers - though most of the parents and coaches I've talked to would like to see it end, too. GCA Cancels The Hardline A Garland Christian Academy parent told me last week that there was no way the school would approve of The Hardline - The Ticket's afternoon drive-time sports talk show - playing the GCA girls basketball team in an exhibition. Yesterday, The Hardline's Corby Davidson confirmed the game had been called off on the air. Now it seems that Lake Highlands girls team has thrown down a challenge. Here's guessing that the LHHS varsity girls will rout The Hardline -- if a minority of the school's administration and parents don't get the even cancelled, too. BYU Recruiting Fact I did not know that Brigham Young University requires that its head football coach and head basketball coach be Mormons. Lovington High School's Most Likely To Succeed? When Chicago Bears Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher was a wide receiver for the Lovington (N.M) High School Wildcats, he'd one day take one of George Clooney's ex-girlfriends on a Valentine's Day date in Las Vegas. Nah, me neither. Editor's Note: Editor-In-Chief Tim Polzer writes on high school sports -- and other things -- every Friday on VYPE.com/DFW.
