Tim Polzer's Rumors & Facts

Dallas, TX

Friday, February 6, 2009

Note: Tim Polzer writes on Dallas-Fort Worth area high school sports every Friday on VYPE.com: An Aggie Helping Baylor? I hear that Midlothian quarterback Bryce Petty's work at Kevin Murray's Air14 Quarterback Academy helped spur Baylor to challenge Virginia Tech for his scholarship signature. Murray, the former Texas A&M quarterback, works with several local QB prospects. Petty originally committed to Tennessee before the Vols fired coach Phil Fulmer and hired Lane Kiffin. Kiffin: Loose Cannon? Speaking of Kiffin, many NFL writers have questioned Tennessee's decision to hire Kiffin citing his lack of control and off-the-cuff remarks as an assistant at USC and head coach of the Oakland Raiders. After calling Florida's Urban Meyer "a cheater" on National Signing Day, Kiffin had to apologize for the accusation and retract his claim after Vols officials pointed out that Meyer's phone calls to recruits were NOT an NCAA violation. I'm guessing that most area VYPE high school coaches have a better grasp of NCAA recruiting rules than Kiffin. Tennessee officials hope that the presence of Lane's dad, longtime NFL defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, will help stabilize the situation. Adcock Making Junior Day Visits Dallas Christian tackle Chris Adcock, one of VYPE's Top 40 2010 recruits and Top-20 O-linemen on TheOldCoach.com, has been invited to seven Junior Days -- Arkansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, SMU, TCU, Texas A&M and Tulsa. Can Wade and Jason Work Together? Word among my NFL sources is Dan Reeve's hiring and hasty retreat from Valley Ranch is going to force Jerry Jones to bring Wade Phillips and Jason Garrett together to hash out what might be mistrust at worst or a question of who reports to who at best. Wonder if Garrett was seething at the thought of Reeves looking over his shoulder and reporting to Phillips? Hall of Fame Hayes Haze I'm told the NFL is not commenting on the feud between Lucille Hester and the family of Bob Hayes because Hester has been ID'd by several former Cowboys as Hayes' sister, while the Hayes family did little to champion his case for the Hall of Fame, or make contact with the NFL. He's a Good Goodwin Can't wait to talk to Rowlett's Marquise Goodwin, who signed a track letter with Texas, for our Spring Sports Preview. Highlighting Heath Rockwall-Heath has set the bar for Signing Day ceremonies, showing highlights of all eight Division I signees to music and having the players sit in front of large posters of themselves. Look for more schools to upgrade their events next February. Allen: Big 12 Feeder School? It might seem that way as four more Allen football players signed with Big 12 schools. Receiver Uzoma Nwachukwu and defensive back Steven Terrell are going to Texas A&M. Defensive lineman Nate Bonsu (Colorado) and defensive back Jeremy Reeves (Iowa State) will take their talents to the North Division. It will be interesting to see how much playing time the quartet will get seeing that all four teams play each other in 2010. Soccer Beats Football? Soccer - and Brown University - won a battle for Plano's Ryan McDuff. McDuff played football, basketball and soccer for the Wildcats, starting on all three squads. Another Big DISD Class The Dallas ISD proudly introduced a record 90 athletes signing with colleges at Ellis Davis Field House. The district hosts all of its schools' signees at one ceremony. This year's class eclipsed last year's total of 74.
