Tim Polzer: Rumors & Facts

Dallas, TX

VYPE Editor-In-Chief writes on Dallas-Ft. Worth area high school sports every Friday on VYPE.com. Rumors & Facts Dallas Academy Says Enough Already Now that the national media has picked up the story of The Covenant School's 100-0 rout of Dallas Academy - and Covenant's decision to forfeit the game - some Dallas Academy players, parents and administrators wish the story - and The Covenant School - would just go away and let the story die. Burkhead Autograph Requests Our VYPE office has received several requests from Nebraska Cornhuskers fans wanting copies of our 2008 Feb. magazine featuring Plano running back and Nebraska commitment Rex Burkhead on the cover. Seems they want the magazines - featuring a great photo by Big Lou Goodman - for autograph purposes. Freshman Makes Plano West Baseball Roster Talk about reloading, we hear that the roster of defending state baseball champion Plano West will include at least one freshman. Soccer Coaches Upset With FC Dallas Area high school soccer coaches are hopping mad at FC Dallas' decision to ban members of its juniors soccer club from playing for their high school teams. The restriction will further weaken the talent from high school soccer teams. Wonder how Frisco high school coaches feel about it considering that the MLS franchise is a partner with Frisco ISD? Vilarino Sticking With Kentucky McKinney guard G.J. Vilarino will follow through with his oral commitment by signing with Kentucky. Vilarino has not wavered despite the Wildcats' struggles under second-year coach Billy Gillispie. VYPE Going Pro? VYPE will soon begin working on a high school sports event partnership with one of the area's most prominent professional teams. High School Ump Strike? Area baseball coaches are worried that a pay disagreement between the Texas Association of Sports Officials and the University Interscholastic League will cause problems in the start of the 2009 season. TASP umpires want to increase the current pay scale from $45 and a percentage of the gate, plus mileage and rider fees. Coaches' hands are tied because the UIL has said that schools that pay umpires more than the allowed fees face penalties and reprimands. Jerry World Eating Up Tarrant County Ad Dollars The Cowboys' new stadium will likely play host to many high school football playoff games in 2009, but some amateur sports teams - especially in Tarrant County - wish Jerry Jones' sales staff would stop raiding their advertisers. Super Bowl Feud? Watch for NBC's Super Bowl coverage to play up the bad feelings between Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt and Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Wisenhunt and Big Ben clashed over play calling when Whisenhunt was the Steelers' offensive coordinator. And both exchanged terse comments when Whisenhunt left for Arizona job. Economy Hits Super Bowl The economy has hit the NFL again. Sources say this year's Super Bowl Game Program will be cut back by 40 pages due to a lack of ad sales. Wylie East Coach Has Pro Ties Yep, Joe Lepsis, Wylie's defensive coordinator recently named first head coach of Wylie East High School, is the brother of former Denver Broncos offensive tackle Matt Lepsis. Some Wylie fans aren't happy with the district's new attendance zones, but being unable to please every family is a challenge all school districts face. East will play a sub-varsity schedule with freshmen and sophomores in 2009. Lepsis will lead East's first varsity season in 2010-11. Ringo Returning to PESH As VYPE columnist Todd Wills first reported, Plano East football coach Johnny Ringo will return for the 2009 season. While some parents were not happy with the Panthers' 1-9 showing in 2008 that followed a fifth-place finish in 2007, cooler heads prevailed among Plano ISD administrators. Ringo is two years removed from leading the Panthers to the regional semifinals. Lincoln Safety Switches Commitment Lincoln's all-state safety Donovan Bonner switched his oral commitment from Colorado State to Missouri. Bonner (6-2, 230) committed to Colorado State last summer when he was playing for the now-disbanded Spruce football program. Less than a month ago, Missouri swooped in with a scholarship offer that seemed a bitter fit. More Football Commitments Bishop Lynch WR Josh Hauser to Holy Cross Garland TE Trevor Eickman to Northwestern State (La.) Jesuit TE Jake Allyn to Cornell Lancaster DB Demontre Hurst to Oklahoma State Lancaster QB/DB Phillip Harvey to Northwestern State (La.) Mansfield Summit OL Chris Friesen to Utah State North Mesquite QB Charlton Johnson to Emporia State Plano OL Hanur Kim to Princeton Rockwall-Heath OL David Abercrombie, RB Everett Gilbert, Darius Jones to Montana State. How Much to Rent Dallas Stars...Uh...Stars? This from D Magazine's FrontBurner blog: Mike Modano and co-general manager Brett Hull demand between $30,000 and $50,000 for appearances, endorsements and speaking engagements. No word on whether Hull's fee decreased after the Sean Avery debacle.

Tim, Cornhusker fans are some of the greatest college football fans in the country. It looks as if Nebraska is not only getting a great football player but also a great individual who will represent the University very well. Keep up the coverage.
