100-0 Rout Sparks Controversy

Dallas, TX

Thursday, January 22, 2009

Dallas-area coaches, boosters and sports talk radio hosts have been debating the issues surrounding a recent girls basketball route: The Covenant School not only defeated Dallas Academy, 100-0, but did not turn off its defensive pressure until it reached the century mark. As a result, The Covenant School's head of school Keith Queal said he will hold "internal discussions" about the game and his coach, Micah Grimes. Grimes called the outcome "unfortunate" and told the Dallas Morning News, "It just happened, and we are not happy about that," Grimes wrote. "Please know Covenant intended no harm against them. I see this as a real learning opportunity, so we can prevent this from happening in the future." Edd Burleson, director of Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS), called the game an "embarrassing incident." "Our motto is 'Competition With Honor,' " Burleson said. "I can't see how the one school can live up to that." The game's boxscore shows Covenant jumping out to a 35-0 lead after one quarter and leading 59-0 at the half. The score was 88-0 after three quarters. "They are really good," Dallas Academy coach Jeremy Civello said. "Their point guard is terrific. This is what it came down to in the second half: steal at half court and layup. Steal and layup. Steal and layup. It was a layup drill. They finally eased up when they got to 100 with about four minutes left." Covenant's point guard scored 48 points. What do you think of this rout, or other routs?
