South wins battle of No. 1s

St. Paul, MN

Monday, January 12, 2009

The best girls basketball player in the state helped prove she plays for the best team in the state Saturday night in a battle of No. 1s. Tayler Hill scored 30 points to lead host No. 1 Class AAAA Minneapolis South over No. 1 Class AA Jordan, 59-52. Kansas State bound guard Brittany Chambers scored 22, as did teammate Leah Dietel, to lead the Jaguars, who beat No. 1 Class AAA New Prague, 39-34, last week. The game was tied 31-31 at the half, but the Tigers outscored Jordan 13-8 in the final seven minutes to clinch the victory. Hill, who is currently second on the state's career scoring list and averages 30 points per game, is on pace to break the record of 3,694 set by former Elgin-Millville star and current Gopher Katie Ohm. Hill, a 5-foot-10 senior guard/forward, is the top recruit in Minnesota. She has said her top three choices are Marquette, Texas and Duke, respectively. However she is still considering staying home to play for the Gophers. Her brother, P.J. Hill, who played at both Minneapolis North and South, is a guard at Ohio State this season.
