St. Paul, MN

Friday, January 2, 2009

Edina won its first-ever Schwan Cup Tournament title on Thursday night by claiming the Gold Division title with a 5-2 vicory over the Academy of Holy Angels at the Xcel Energy Center. The Stars knotted the first goal of the contest, scored by Conner Reilly at 5:05, but the Hornets buzzed back with three goals in less than five minutes — two coming from forward Marshall Everson after fellow forward Charlie Taft initially tied the score at 9:03 — to take a lead they would not relinquish. Holy Angels' John Haeg scored his squad's final goal of the night at 15:36 of the opening frame as the Stars managed just 18 shots total in the contest. Taft and fellow forward Anders Lee slotted home second period scores to bring the score to its final count as Edina fired 40 shots total in the game. Edina, ranked No. 2 in the state, improved to 11-1 on the season, while Holy Angels fell to 5-2-1 with the loss. Wayzata wins Silver Division Behind 21 saves from goaltender Ty Simcoe, Wayzata won the Schwan Silver title with a 2-0 shutout of Benilde-St. Margaret's in the Thursday evening matchup at the X. Both teams battled each other to a stalemate for more than two-and-a-half periods before the Trojans' Kevin Blackley netted the would-be game-winner at 11:14 of the final frame to put his team on top at last. Blackley's teammate, Billy Soule, iced the game on the power play nearly three minutes later as Benilde found itself taking too many crucial penalties in the contest's final moments to wage an effective comeback attempt. Wayzata improved to 7-3-1 with the victory, while the Red Knights fell to 7-2 in defeat. Mahtomedi takes Bronze Division title Quick-strike goals by Brandon Zurn and Charlie Adams were just what Mahtomedi needed to ensure a high-scoring victory over Owatonna in the Bronze Division final in an afternoon showdown in downtown St. Paul. Both teams were tied 2-2 in the second period before the two scores within 29 seconds of each other gave the Zephyrs a 4-2 lead en route to a final 5-4 victory. Mahtomedi, ranked ninth in Class A, fought back from a prompt 1-0 deficit just 20 seconds into the game to take a 2-1 lead on two goals by Ben Holker before the huskies knotted the score before the first intermission. Zurn tallied the final Zephyrs score at 14:16 of the final period to give his team a 5-2 lead. Owatonna kept the game interesting with two goals in the final stanza, but could not pull even as Mahtomedi ran its record to 7-2-1 with the victory.
