Class A Results St. Thomas won its fourth-straight Class A State Boys Swimming and Diving championship by scoring 247 points, outpacing second-place Fergus Falls by 50, to win the 2008 title. The championship was St. Thomas' ninth overall, yet in spite of taking the State title, the Cadets won just one event — senior Matt Hoyland closed out his high school career with an All-American finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.42 seconds. St. Thomas demonstrated an all-around excellence in the meet, as Cadets swimmers competed in the championship round in 8-of-12 events. The 200-yard medley relay team of Owen Rickey, Adam Rohde, Michael Quinn and Hoyland finished second in a time of 1:39.36. Hoyland also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle with an All-American consideration time of 21.40, while Quinn finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a finals result of 1:00.68. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Hoyland, Colin Drake, Joe Boldt and Conor Triggs took fourth with a swim of 1:29.64. Drake (1:48.48) was fifth in the 200-yard freestyle and Rickey (56.11) finished third in the 100 backstroke. The Cadets' 400-yard freestyle relay team of Drake, Triggs, Quinn and Cal Rohde (3:21.08) took sixth in that event, while Triggs (5:05.54) took eighth in the 500-yard freestyle race. Inver Grove Heights-based Simley finished ninth in the State meet, claiming an even 100 points, with freshman Nathan Briguet leading the way with a third-place finish in the 500. Tony Challeen (22.01) took fifth in the 50, while Jeff Bauer (1:03.88) was sixth in the 100 backstroke. The Spartans' 400 freestyle relay team of Andy Bollinger, Brad Mueller, Challeen and Briguet finished seventh with a finals time of 3:22.18. Class AA Results Stillwater swam its way to a fifth-place finish, the top area finisher in Class AA, as the Ponies tallied 173 points. Edina won the big-school competition with a score of 258.5. Stillwater won two individual events, but could not crack the top-3 in a strong Class AA field as the Ponies finished behind Edina, Minnetonka, Burnsville and Moorhead. Cretin-Derham Hall finished seventh overall, with 99 points, as Mounds View finished 14th with 51 points. The meet was a triumphant one for a pair of Stillwater seniors, as Andy Knaak and Brandon Adair both claimed All-American honors in winning their respective events. Knaak swam a 1:51.95 in the 200-yard individual medley to earn his triumph, while Adair's victory came with a time of 50.29 in the 100-yard butterfly. Knaak also swam an All-American time in the 100 breaststroke, with a third-place finish of 57.73. Mounds View's Roman Becicka claimed an individual championship as the Mustangs senior won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:40.81. He also took seventh (1:56.27) in the 200 IM . Two Stillwater relay teams claimed second-place finishes. The 200 freestyle foursome of Daved Najarian, Andrew DeShaw, Knaak and Adair claimed an All-American time of 1:26.32 as did the 200 medley squad of Greg Wise, Knaak, Adair and DeShaw after a race result of 1:35.42. Individually, Cretin-Derham Hall's Brian Dailey-Arndt took second (50.57) in the 100 butterfly and third in the 100 backstroke (51.80). His butterfly time earned All-American status, while the backstroke result garnered All-American consideration. Mounds View's Tom Gimm took third in the 1-meter diving competition, scoring a 368.80. Cretin's Tim Tysk-Bell (21.76) took sixth in the 50 freestyle, with Stillwater's Andrew DeShaw (22.05) finishing eighth in the event. DeShaw (48.53) also finished eighth in the 100 freestyle, while teammate Greg Wise (52.31) was seventh in the 100 butterfly. Woodbury's Zach Lallier (4:48.28) placed seventh in the 500, while North St. Paul's Tom Schultz (53.82) took eighth in the 100 backstroke.
