The Bishop Carroll wrestler signed with OU on Wednesday

"I was thinking I was going to red-shirt my freshman year," Detmer said. "But then once I got up there the coach told me that he wanted me to be ready to compete for a spot right away, so that's awesome."

Kyle Detmer's junior season ended with a bitter taste in his mouth. Detmer lost in the state championship match to Pete Tapia of Winfield in an upset, but nothing will keep down this strong wrestler and future Oklahoma Sooner.

"I liked OU because they had a lot more coaches there," Detmer said. "It's cool because they're not really paid coaches, they're more like volunteers, and they help a ton."

Detmer also likes the academics at OU, where he hopes to study medicine.

"OU has a really good post-graduate school," Detmer said. "There is a lot of academic support for all of the athletes."

It is uncommon for Division I wrestlers to compete right away, but that will not be the case for Detmer.

"I was thinking I was going to red-shirt my freshman year," Detmer said. "But then once I got up there the coach told me that he wanted me to be ready to compete for a spot right away, so that's awesome."

This is the culmination of a long recruiting process for the senior at Bishop Carroll. Unlike most athletes, Detmer worked hard to get his name out for colleges instead of having them come to him.

"I got my first letters about a year ago," Detmer said. "But then this summer I started sending colleges stuff and OU responded and it worked out."

Deciding before the wrestling season starts will definitely give Detmer some peace of mind.

"I figured schools would run out of money towards the end of the year," Detmer said. "It just made sense to make my decision right now."

After placing third at state his freshman year, Detmer won the state championship at 145 pounds in his sophomore season. He is one of the most talented wrestlers in the state this year.

"I'm not sure what weight I'll wrestle at this year," Detmer said. "I want to wrestle 152, but I am way over that right now."
