The City League released its annual all-city picks on Monday. The first team may be full of more Division I prospects than any all-city team in history. With Blake Bell at quarterback, Bryce Brown and Demarcus Robinson at running back, and Jospeh Randle at specialist and safety, the all-city team could play with any league in the state.

Wichita Heights, a loser at Junction City last Friday, accounted for six of the 12 players named first-team all-city on defense.

Several defensive honorees (Joey Barnes, Jeff Poe, Jacob Cole, etc.) have been multi-year starters for their teams, but not Scott Cooper. The Bishop Carroll cornerback was a first-year starter, but he flourished in the Golden Eagles defensive system in 2008 with three interceptions on the year. We caught up with him on Monday.

VYPE: When were you told about the all-city teams?
Cooper: "I found out at about 3:30 on Monday at a team meeting after school."

VYPE: What was your reaction to the award?
Cooper: "I was really surprised because my goal at the beginning of the season was just to earn a starting job at any position, then after that I wanted to hopefully make honorable mention. Then a couple weeks ago my teammate Nick Johansen told me he wouldn't be surprised if I made first team and I didn't believe him. Guess he was right (laughs)."

VYPE: How did you improve at cornerback throughout the season?
Cooper: "Well I had the pleasure of going up against Johansen every day in practice. That made me look really bad at times, but I also knew I would never go up against anyone that would be tougher to cover." (Johansen is 6'4" and was one of the top five receivers in the state this year). "The offense's precision in general helped our secondary improve as a whole."

VYPE: You were a quarterback your junior year. Obviously you switched because that is Blake Bell's position. Was there uncertainty about where you'd end up playing this year?
Cooper: "Yeah it was tough, but in the end I stuck with it and I definitely don't have any regrets."
