Rugby

Run, tackle, throw. This mindset known to most as rugby mixes a little of soccer, football, extreme endurance, and physical contact all in one setting. Many may not realize the substantial endurance it takes to play this unusual sport, but Jenks High School seniors Burns Getchell and Scott Russell, both 2 years or more on the team, have had first-hand experience with the agility and stamina they face each time they step on the field. "The hardest part about rugby is the constant play. You have to run around a lot so you have to be in really, really good shape," Getchell said. "I think the hardest thing is the stamina rugby requires. It's never stopping, and always running," Russell said. During the fall pre-season, the Jenks Rugby team practices around 2 and a half hours for 2 days a week. There is approximately 15 people on each rugby team, and when it comes down to the biggest competition, "any sport with Jenks involved, Union is always the biggest rival," Getchell said. Both Getchell and Russell plan on playing college rugby, but they know their choices are limited considering this rough sport is not as popular as most other sports. "I plan on playing college rugby, maybe at OSU, but they don't really offer scholarships for it," Getchell said.
