QUESTION: What eats 400 biscuits, 320 pork chops, 280 servings of banana pudding and swigs gallons of tea and punch before burning it all off with 48 minutes of intense exercise?
ANSWER: The four local football teams that enjoy a weekly pre-game meal courtesy of Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church.

Eight years ago, the church began providing pregame meals for the Fuquay-Varina High football team. Since then, Fuquay Baptist has reached out to Middle Creek High, Holly Springs High and Harnett Central High. Now, church volunteers prepare and deliver meals to those three schools and the Bengals drive over to the church each Friday afternoon to chow down.
Fuquay coach, Ryan Habich said several of his players have told him that the pregame meals at the church are one of the best things about playing football at Fuquay.
“A lot of the places I’ve been, the kids have to hang out in a weight room or an old gymnasium, where it’s all hot,” Habich said. “We get a chance to come here and eat and enjoy each other’s fellowship, rest and get ready for the game.”
The meal begins at 3:30 p.m. After that, the Fuquay-Varina players have time to watch movies, play video games and just relax in the church’s youth center.
“We want to share the love of Christ in a practical way,” Fuquay Baptist youth pastor, Joe Monk said. The pregame meals are just one of the ways the church is reaching out to help the community. Monk says the program gives Fuquay Baptist an opportunity to minister to young people and it meets a need for the football teams.
Monk and as many as 30 volunteers from his church and Piney Grove Baptist church in Fuquay pitch in to serve over 4,400 individual meals during the football season.
John Matt, a Bengals lineman, said his favorite menu item is chicken cordon-bleu, and of course the annual steak and potatoes meal before every homecoming game.
