Mighty Titans

Thursday, October 16, 2008

There were some exciting games in Week 7 of the regular season football schedule. Here are a few of the noteworthy scores: Carl Albert 16, Guthrie 13 Carl Albert used a balanced offensive attack and a stingy defense to beat Class 5A's top-ranked Guthrie, snapping the Bluejays 20-game win streak. The Titans got 225 yards passing and two touchdowns from quarterback JT Realmuto and 125 yards rushing from running back David Oku to collect the win. Carl Albert scored a touchdown on its first play from scrimmage, a touchdown pass from Realmuto to wide receiver Daytowian Lowe for a 7-0 lead. The Carl Albert defense took over from there. The Titans harrased one of the best passing team's in the state. Guthrie came in averaging 35 points a game and quarterback Keaton Callins had passed for 1,100 yards and 18 touchdowns. But the Titans pressured Callins on nearly every passing play and the secondary blanketed the wide receivers. Guthrie had just 225 yards total offense. Carl Albert defensive back Markell Walker had two interceptions. Carl Albert led 16-6 before Guthrie scored a touchdown with 1:36 remaining in the game to cut the lead to three. But the Titans recovered the onside kick to collect the win over the defending state champions. Tuttle 33, Newcastle 2 Class 3A's top-ranked Tuttle continues to beat up its opponents this season. The Tigers have not had a close game this season and beat their second straight top 5 ranked team. Tuttle beat Clinton a week ago 35-17 and followed that up by beating its rival in dominating fashion. Newcastle could only generate a safety for a score. Edmond Santa Fe 42, Putnam City North 14 Edmond Santa Fe controlled the game from the beginning to collect the win in a game featuring two Class 6A ranked teams. The Wolves used a balanced passing and running game on offense to score at will against the Panthers. The Wolves were also able to shut down Putnam North's running game, which averaged 305 yards. El Reno 10, Deer Creek 3 Watch out for El Reno. The Indians beat their second straight ranked team, this time with their defense. El Reno beat then-second ranked Lawton MacArthur a week ago 35-17 and followed up that win by beating Deer Creek on Thursday. El Reno shut down Deer Creek superstar quarterback Dax Dilbeck to get the win and most likely move into the rankings next week. Del City 25, Norman North 21 Maybe Norman North is not the team that will end the East side dominance in Class 6A. Norman North lost for the second straight week, this time to an unranked opponent. The Timberwolves lost to Mustang a week ago 30-29. But this loss on Thursday is even more shocking considering Del City came into the game 1-5 while Norman North was 5-1 and has some of the best talent in the state. But Del City collected the most shocking win of the season so far with the upset.
