Last weekend was a historic slate of games with North Shore defeating Lufkin to break the consecutive regular-season winnig streak at 73 games. Other surpises also went down, so check out our recap of the weekend.

Friendswood Falls

Friendswood (2-1) (1-1) only got to enjoy being atop the 4A ranks in Houston for a mere week after they fell to Angleton 28-25 on Saturday. In the Mustangs first two victories they knocked off the Dayton Broncos and Texas City Stingaree’s, both ranked #1 in Houston before their respective loss to Friendswood. The Mustangs had trouble stopping the spread option that Angleton employs, as they gave up a season high 28 points. In their wins over Dayton and TC, both known for having explosive offenses, they allowed 21 and 22 points respectively, which is quite an accomplishment. The defense can’t accept all the blame, as QB Jacob Karam (Texas Tech) and the rest of the offense didn’t play up to their potential. The loss drops Friendswood to 1-1 in district play with the toughest of the schedule behind them. In their next 3 games they play Santa Fe, Dawson and Manvel, who are a combined 1-10 on the season. Dawson and Manvel are both in their first years of varsity play.

Exciting Finish in Record Breaking Game

North Shore (3-0) won their third game of the year 28-21 in dramatic fashion against the Lufkin Panthers (2-3) in a hostile environment at a packed Abe Martin Stadium in Lufkin. With this victory, Head Coach David Aymond won his 73rd consecutive regular season game, a state record previously owned by the Southlake Carroll Dragons. Through the first 3 quarters all of the Mustangs touchdowns were courtesy of the defense. A Fumble return by DE Terence Kindle for TD, DT Jarrod Foster falling on a fumble by Lufkin backup QB Arthur Tinz in the end zone, and a Larry Stephens scoop-and-score for six is how all of NS’s points were accounted for. Down 21-7 with 2 minutes to go in the third, Lufkin moved the ball effectively and quickly tied the score as the Jeffery Claybon to Quinn Trimble connection couldn’t be stopped. Trimble finished with 7 catches for 147 yards and a score. The play of the night came on a fourth-and-three from the Lufkin 26 yard line with 26 seconds remaining as NS QB Alex Tillman found standout junior WR Deandrew White on a quick slant route. White broke 4 tackles on his way to the end zone as North Shore took the 28-21 lead with 18 seconds left. North Shore DB Devon Gibson intercepted the first pass from Claybon on the next possession to seal the victory for the Mustangs. North Shore was out-gained 220-304 in total yardage and committed 9 penalties to the Panther’s 4. Though, the most telling number is Lufkin’s 6 turnovers to the Mustang’s 1.

District 19-4A Very Offensive

It was a high scoring night for just about every team in district 19-4A this past weekend. Dayton won 48-30 over a surprisingly good North Forest team. Dayton (3-0) (2-0) had to score 20 4th quarter points to beat the Bulldogs as QB Cody Green (Nebraska) accounted for 6 touchdowns (3 passing, 3 rushing) and 270 yards on the night. North Forest (3-1) (1-1) RB Christian Terry ran for 112 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Bulldogs didn’t attempt a pass all game. The Crosby Cougars (2-2) (2-0) and RB Chance Casey put up a 50 spot on the first-year Goose Creek Memorial, who scored 34 points themselves. Casey, who holds offers from the likes of Baylor and Nebraska, ran wild to the likes of 191 yards and 4 scores. He also contributed 37 receiving yards. Memorial WR Patrick Wood contributed 11 catches and 151 and 3 touchdowns in the losing effort. Both teams combined for 849 yards of total offense and surprisingly there was only 1 turnover. Barbers Hill (1-3) (1-1) picked up their first win of the season in a 48-10 blowout of Kingwood Park (1-3) (0-2). The Eagles didn’t punt a single time as they rolled up the Panthers for 449 yards of offense. QB Tony Carmona threw for 273 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for another. RB Logan Stubbs ran for 100 yards and found pay dirt 3 more times. In the lowest scoring game this week in the district, C.E. King topped Galena Park 37-7 to move them to 3-1 on the year and 2-0 in district. King’s monster of a running back, Alvester Alexander, put this team on his back as he rushed for 163 yards and 3 touchdowns. In all they combined 264 points, which averages out to 33 points for every team.

Ball Returns after Ike

It was an emotional Saturday as the Galveston Ball Tornados returned to the field for the first time since Hurricane Ike displaced many of Galveston’s residents and threatened to end Ball’s season. Ball (1-1) (0-1) took on Clear Creek (2-2) (1-1) at Veterans Memorial stadium and eventually lost 17-7, but the moral victory was much bigger. It can’t be put into words how big this game was for Ball, proven by the fact that even Clear Creek fans stood and cheered for them. Many of these kids’ lives are still in disarray after the storm as the death toll from the area continues to rise everyday. Ball won their first game, 35-7, against a LaMarque team that almost equally affected by the storm. Ball wouldn’t be as fortunate in their second game as they obviously weren’t in optimal playing shape amongst the many other distractions. Ball committed 12 penalties that tallied almost 100 yards for Creek. They mustered only a little more than 200 yards of offense and finally scored on a fumble recovery with under 4 minutes remaining. It’s going to be an up-hill battle for Ball to make the playoff’s, but if they play with the same resolve that they’ve shown in coming together as a team then the possibilities are endless.
