FOUNTAIN LAKE — Fountain Lake scored 14 points in the first three minutes en route to a 49-13 win over Bauxite in the VYPE Central Arkansas Game of the Week.

Senior running back Andrew Davis led the Fountain Lake attack with 14 carries for 100 yards and three touchdowns. He also threw a pass for 18 yards, when the Cobras used the “Wildcat” formation. He earned most of that yardage in the second half, as the reserves played the second half that featured a continuous clock due to the 35-point “mercy rule.” For his efforts, Davis earned Hot N’ Ready/VYPE.com Impact Player of the game honors, presented by Little Caesars.

“He is one of our better players,” Fountain Lake coach Tommy Gilleran said. “He is more physical than Quinten (Lindsey). Quentin is more of a speed guy. Andrew is the hammer guy. He poses problems when we put him in the shotgun because now they have to tackle him running, too.”

Big-play senior running back Quentin Lindsey ran eight times for 61 yards. Fellow backfield mate, senior Justin Rushing ran for 43 yards and a score on two carries and caught a 22-yard touchdown pass.

“(Bauxite) overloaded us, and our wings had a big night,” Gilleran said. “They let us get to the edge a little bit, and we took advantage of it. We hadn’t run a lot of that stuff, so it’s good to run different things.”

The first two Fountain Lake scoring drives took a combined five plays. Rushing took a double handoff and galloped 38 yards for a score on the third play from scrimmage. Bauxite’s first drive ended when it fumbled on its own 43-yard line and Davis recovered.

After no gain on its first play, Cobra quarterback David Gray hit wide-open tight end Eric Pearson for a 43-yard touchdown down the middle to take a commanding 14-0 lead with 8:55 to go in the first quarter.

The Cobras struck again in the second quarter when Davis capped off a four-play drive with a 41-yard TD run to up the margin to 21-0 with 11 minutes left in the half.

After the ensuring kickoff, Bauxite took over on the Fountain Lake 42. Two plays later, senior quarterback Blake Childress connected with classmate Hayden Anderson on a 41-yard touchdown pass to cut the margin to 21-6.

Bauxite tried an onside kick that the Cobras recovered on the Miners’ 48. They converted the good field position into points when Davis walked in from five yards out in four plays. Sophomore Mark Makin returned a punt 60 yards for another score when Gray, who was 5-for-5 for 108 yards passing, hit Rushing on a 22-yard scoring pass with 28 seconds left in the half to extend the lead to 42-6 to invoke the “mercy rule” for the second half.

Fountain Lake’s final score came in the third quarter when Davis trotted in from three yards. Childress added a 24-yard touchdown run late in the game to make the final score 49-13.

Fountain Lake (5-0, 2-0, 3A-5 Conference) plays at Magnet Cove, who is undefeated in the league play. In two weeks, the Cobras play host to 3A defending state champion Glen Rose.

“We have to win that,” Gilleran said. “It is going to be on the road, so it is a big game for us. Glen Rose is going to be big, too. Luckily, our offensive line is good, and we have four great running backs. We’ll focus next week on Magnet and get ready for them. Magnet is spread out and does some different things. For us, we like that because we are a little smaller, but we are faster on defense. We are quicker to the ball. We will focus on them and take it one week at a time.”

Bauxite (1-4, 0-2) looks to snap a two-game skid at Centerpoint next week.
