The Oklahoma Sandites won the American Amateur Baseball Congress Jackie Robinson World Series in Tulsa on July 9. The team of local 9 year-old and under baseball players from Sand Springs went undefeated throughout the entire series.
The final game came down to an all-Oklahoma championship game where the Sandites defeated a team out of Claremore 19-8. The Sandites also defeated teams from Albany, New York, Atlanta, Georgia and Cheshire Connecticut. Giving them the number one seed going into bracket play. Bracket play began with a win over New York (5-4), Atlanta (28-9) and the Oklahoma Blue Sox in the finals. The MVP of the tournament was awarded to Hunter Greathouse for an outstanding offensive and defensive performance.
The Oklahoma Sandites then participated in the Hap Dumont National Baseball Congress World Series in Harrison, Arkansas on July 25-30 and placed second. They came back from a less than impressive pool play to fight their way back to a second place finish. They battled it out against teams such as the South Missouri Silver Sluggers, Mount Grove Panthers, Oklahoma City Mudcats and a team from Topeka, Kansas.
Before the World Series win, the Sandites won numerous tournaments during their 2008 season including a USSSA qualifier in Muskogee, a World qualifying tournament in Stillwater and the Field of Dreams May Classic in Van Buren, Arkansas. The team also were runners up in four 10 year-old tournaments as well as their finish in the Hap Dumont World Series in Harrison, Arkansas.
The Sandites consist of Braden Askew, Jacob Bailey, Jordan Clark, Tyler Dudley, Hunter Greathouse, Garrett Holcomb, Kyle Keener, Jake Lawson, Josh Taber, Mackenzie Thompson and Treyce Tolbert. The team is coached by Adam Dudley, Mike Bailey, Tom Askew, Ronnie Taber, Jeff Lawson and Kevin Greatouse.
