Oklahoma athletes set their goals high to make it to the 2012 Olympics
Jon Michael McGrath aims for London
Never be afraid to shoot for the stars, and for junior Jon McGrath of Bishop Kelley, that is definitely his life motto.
16 year old McGrath is training to be an Olympic skeet shooter, and plans to compete in the 2012 Olympics in London. This up and coming athlete got started all by accident.
“I was at summer camp and decided to shoot a gun for the first time in my life. I found out I was actually pretty good so I started competing in local tournaments,” McGrath said.
It wasn’t long for this kid’s talent to show. Four months after his first tournament he won a world championship.
The practice schedule for McGrath is demanding when a tournament is coming up.
“We try to have our performance peak at certain times so we practice more for that. Most of the time I practice two to four days a week,” McGrath said.
He is the first member of his family to take on the sport of skeet shooting.
“Nobody in my family shoots competitively, but my dad and I enjoy hunting together on the weekends,” McGrath said.
McGrath attended the 2008 Olympics in Beijing with his team, but was unable to compete due to his young age. However, that did not get him down and his goals for the future are bigger than ever.
“I want to win a gold medal in London. I hope that the U.S. can go one and two in Men’s International Skeet Event as well,” McGrath said.
