Southeast Raleigh quarterback Gabe Henderson made a verbal commitment to Kent State at a press conference Friday afternoon, but remains open to the recruiting process should another school make an offer.
"I owe it all to God. Without him none of this would have been possible," Henderson said at the press conference.
Henderson said Kent State offered him everything he was looking for academically and athletically.
"They have a great system there. They run the same offense that we run here, so I should be able to jump right in," said Henderson. "If a professional career doesn't work out, I want to go into sports broadcasting, and they have a really good program for that."
Last season, Henderson threw for nearly 2,400 yards and 29 touchdowns. In 14 games, Henderson completed 167 of 290 passes and threw just eight interceptions. He also ran for 660 yards, scoring 11 rushing touchdowns.
Prior to the press conference, Henderson narrowed his list to Buffalo, Georgia Tech and Kent State.
Henderson also had offers from Liberty, N.C. Central and Western Carolina. There had been some interest from N.C. State and East Carolina, but Henderson said N.C. State wants to see him play some more this season before extending an offer, and East Carolina received a commitment from another quarterback.
After winning the school's first conference championship last year, Henderson says he has his eyes set on the state championship this year.
"I wanted to go ahead and get this over with so I can focus on school and the season, I want to win the state championship this year, that's my goal," Henderson said.
Southeast Raleigh will begin the season on Aug. 21 at Holly Springs.
