Football or Basketball...or Baseball/Softball? You tell us.

Central Indiana, IN

Wednesday, October 1, 2008

A few weeks ago, we ran a poll on our Web site, www.vype.com, asking you to vote on what is Indiana's favorite high school sport, between the choices of football, basketball, baseball/softball. The results, quite simply, were a little staggering. Football walked away from this unscientific sample as the big winner, garnering nearly 67 percent of the vote. Is it really all that surprising that football won our little poll? No, not when football season's in high gear, a new stadium has opened in downtown Indy and the Colts are a very hot ticket. But the total percentage shocked me. And, as much as I love baseball, having played the game myself, my jaw dropped to see that baseball/softball garnered 23 percent of the vote. Basketball? It came in dead last...with just 10 percent of the vote. Perhaps the question is obvious, but, I'll state it anyway: where's the love for hoops in the Hoosier state? Has basketball fallen in popularity this far, or are there other outside and mitigating factors we don't know about? Has football, which has overtaken every sport as most popular in the country, really that far ahead in a die-hard basketball state like Indiana? At VYPE, as we prepare for winter sports (including basketball), we want to hear what you think. We're going to compile some feedback from our readers and share it with you. Write us at letters.centralindiana@vype.com with your thoughts. What's your favorite sport? Why? And what do you think our poll results say about the state of basketball in the basketball state? Hopefully, we'll get to the bottom of this and find reason behind the numbers. In the meantime, flip through this month's magazine and you'll find a plethora of enticing high school sports action, from soccer and tennis to football and cross country. Plus, be sure to check out our features on football tailgates and school traditions.
