The Union Redskins took two squads, a first team and a second team, to Edmond to participate in the Oklahoma Showdown 7on7. The Skins, through rigorous heat, competed against 10 other teams from across the state.
After adjusting to the tournament format and 7on7 layout, Union won all but one group stage games, and cruised through the knockout rounds on the shoulders of defensive ball hawk Luke Snyder, quarterback Chase Boyce, and receiver Thomas Roberson. Boyce, who hooked up with Roberson throughout the weekend, helped the lanky receiver grab MVP honors at the event. Deante Morris, who is starting to develop into a great replacement for OSU signee Tracey Moore, was also a machine. The 6-foot-3 tight end helped bail the Redskins out of many third down scenarios.
The Redskins faced the surprising Southmoore Sabercats in the finals and defeated the new Moore school 26-18 in the finals. Each game ran on a continuous 30-minute clock. Both teams alternated offense and defense where the drives would start on the defense's 40-yard line. Teams gained 6-points for touchdowns, and 2-points for interceptions. If the defenses held, then it would be considered a turnover and the offense received the ball at the 40 again and started their drive.
More in-depth coverage, photos, and videos to come on the event.
