Kuhn injured in scrimmage

Little Rock Christian quarterback could be sidelined up to eight weeks
Little Rock Christian senior quarterback Griffin Kuhn could miss a most of the season after suffering a leg injury in a scrimmage jamboree at War Memorial Stadium Tuesday night.
On the third play from scrimmage a Little Rock Catholic defender hit Kuhn, and his leg didn’t give because his cleats were stuck in the turf.
“This is my senior season, and I worked so hard, and to get hurt in a freakin’ scrimmage game … I’m devastated,” Kuhn said.
Kuhn said Wednesday a doctor diagnosed him with a spiral break of his tibia. A magnetic resonance imaging test was performed to see “if I have any ligament damage on one side,” Kuhn said. The test results weren’t yet available. Kuhn said doctors told him optimistically he could be back on the field in six weeks if there is no ligament damage. If Kuhn sustained ligament damage, he will have surgery and try to come back in eight weeks.
“We want Griff to get well, however long it takes,” Christian coach Johnny Watson said. “Whatever the Lord has planned is the way it will go. We would love to have Griff back tomorrow. If he doesn’t come back he will have different role on this team. He will help get Jesse (Stone) ready.”
Junior backup quarterback Jesse Stone (6-1, 160) moves into the starting role and took over for Kuhn for the rest of the jamboree and “did quite well,” Watson said.
“(Stone) isn’t as experienced as Griff, but he can throw the football pretty good,” Watson said. “The offense will revolve around what he can do.”
Kuhn (6-3, 180), a two-time all-stater, threw 28 touchdown passes last season. VYPE.com ranks Kuhn as the No. 16 in-state recruit. Kuhn, who could play defensive back in college, attended camp at Baylor and received interest from Central Arkansas and Louisiana Tech.
Little Rock Christian, VYPE Arkansas Football’s No.2-ranked team in 5A, relies on Michael Dyer to pick up the slack. Dyer, who earned EA Sports National Sophomore of the Year Award, ran for more than 2,700 yards in 2007.
“We’re going to see how much Jesse can do, and if Michael needs to run more we will do that,” Watson said. “We will do whatever we need to meet our goals and put points on the board.”

Kuhn’s injury was the third serious mishap involving a key Central Arkansas area prep player this summer. Bauxite junior quarterback Blake Childress is sidelined for the season after breaking his collarbone during a practice. Pulaski Academy senior linebacker Andrew Newell, PA’s leading tackler in 2007, will miss at least the first half of the season with a knee injury.
Little Rock Fair was dealt a blow of a different kind. Senior running back Stephen Houston, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards last season, moved to Ohio with his family.
