Houston's Top 25 -- No. 25 Chavez Lobos

There’s no doubt the impact coach Dr. Mike Jackson has had on the Chavez Lobos’ program since he arrived four years ago for Milby High School.

In three seasons, Jackson has compiled an 18-14 record and led them to the playoffs in each season. Before his arrival the Lobos were 15-46 and never reached the playoffs.

But Jackson has some big holes to fill on defense with the departure of defensive end Mike Brockers, who signed with LSU and defensive back Chris Porter who’s now playing for Trinity Valley.

Expected to step up and be a team leader on defense is senior Roland Veal, who was first-team, all-district last season with five interceptions.

“Leal is the talented cornerback who college are looking for,” Jackson said. “He’s a shutdown corner and can cover an entire side of the field.”

Offensively the Lobos should be outstanding as they return 10 starters from last year’s team, which averaged 456 yards-per-game. Senior quarterback Andre Kelly is the driver of this well-oiled machine.

Kelly is coming off a year where he threw for 2,062 yards with 22 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. His favorite two targets from last season are back as well. Wide receiver Jafus Gaines is only a junior but put up stellar numbers last season with 882 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns. Tight end Traymond Brown should also factor heavily in the Lobos’ offense this season as they try and improve on last year’s 6-4 record.

Prediction: Playoff Bound as Third Seed.
Fun Facts: Chavez High School opened in 2000.
Lobos on Note: Hooper Jamal Fenton and Footballer Michael Brockers were the high Division I prospects in 2009. Fenton is headed to New Mexico and the 6-foot-6 Brockers is headed to LSU.
