Weekend Update

Central Indiana, IN

Monday, August 11, 2008

Here is your weekend update, regarding some of Central Indiana's finest: PESZEK OUT AT BEIJING OLYMPICS Sam Peszek, a Cathedral High School student and McCordsville native, sprained her ankle in the warm-ups before the gymnastics prelims at the Beijing Olympics. She did compete on the uneven bars, leading off with a 14.80. More than likely, she will be unable to compete with her U.S. teammates in the finals. DIVING Carmel diver Steele Johnson won three junior national 1-meter diving titles at the Speedo Junior National Championships in The Woodlands, Texas over the weekend. Johnson scored 306.35 points to capture the crowns. He is considered Indiana's next premier diver. Franklin's Zachary Cooper won the boys 11-and-under platform diving title as well. Morgan Meixner of Indianapolis finished second in the girls 11-and-under. Grace Fulwider of Brownsburg finished third, while Sarah Bacon of Indianapolis was fourth in the girls 12-13 age group (platform). Andrew Cramer of Indianapolis won the boys 14-15 age group platform event with 433 points. FOOTBALL The Indiana Football Coaches Association (IFCA) has discussed adding a sixth class of football to the IHSAA playoff system. Currently, the IFCA is surveying its members regarding the change. The current playoff system of five classes, are comprised of 64 schools per class. The proposed sixth class would create a 32-team 6A - and would require the IHSAA bylaw requiring the number of schools per class to be divided equally. In essence, it would create a football "super class." Class 6A would have an extra week in the schedule. The current five class format has been in place since 1985. As reported by The Indianapolis Star, it's unlikely this change would happen until the 2011 season. CYCLING Carmel's Weston Luzzader won the junior short-course title at the USA Cycling National Championships on Thursday, finishing with the atime of 1:11:12.20. Adam Leibovitz of Indianapolis, won Wednesday's time trial event in the 17-18 junior age group.
