Fayetteville's Rosteck Wins Kicker Showcase

Friday, August 8, 2008

TULSA, Okla. - "This event was an A+," said former NFL kicker Jason Staurovsky as he recapped his 1st Annual Kicker Showcase Evaluation Camp and Competition. On the blazing hot LaFortune Stadium turf Saturday. "The competition was strong and the events were a huge success in that the kids got a very good objective evaluation of how close they are to being a college kicker." Jason named both Will Rosteck of Fayetteville High and Carl Salazar of Broken Arrow High winners of the Don Chandler Outstanding Kicker Award as they were neck and neck in an intense competition. Salazar won the morning events, hitting 12 out of 12 kicks in the Big 12 Shootout competition and also winning the Kick-Off competition with the longest, highest kick-off average. However, Rosteck beat out Salazar in both of the afternoon's head to head competitions with a 50 yarder in the Toe-to-Toe tournament and with a 55 yarder in the Last Man Standing event. Kevin Wallace of Union also kicked very well and ended up a close third. Final score was tallied based on how the athlete placed in each of the events. The higher your finish the lower your score; lowest score wins. Here are the Final overall standings: T1. Will Rosteck - Fayettville - 9 points T1. Carl Salazar - Broken Arrow - 9 points 3. Kevin Wallace - Union - 10 points 4. Cole Way - Union - 17 points 5. Pete Testa - Cascia Hall - 18 points 6. Marshall GIlbert - Tulsa Memorial - 21 points 7. Chris Peoples - Vian - 22 points (includes last in kick-offs, did not kick due to injury) 8. Drew Patton - Fayettville - 24 points 9. TJ Griffith - Grove - 27 points 10. Ian Sanders - Christian Heritage, Del City - 28 points 11. Jack Fiscus - Bixby - 29 points Judges Staurovsky, Tress Way of OU and Matt Hulse of TU were split on who should be top kicker. "With this many good kickers it is highly unusual for only two guys to split the individual events," said Staurovsky, "and everything came up dead even, it was totally unexpected. They had already been kicking for four hours, and are both very good kickers, so rather than make them kick any more, we decided they both deserved it equally." Staurovsky gave the event trophy to Rosteck to take back to Arkansas and will have another made for Salazar. "We have already made adjustments to our scoring system so this shouldn't happen again." In addition to the awards, Rosteck and Salazar each will receive a full scholarship to Staurovsky's Winter Transition Camp, which is focused more on instruction in the skills necessary to transition to college kicking. Wallace will receive a 50% scholarship. "Although it is not just for the recruiting class, the Transition Camp could be the last chance many kickers in that class will have to get noticed before signing day," said Staurovsky, "It is our goal to maximize every kicker's chances to play at the next level." The point of our events is to evaluate these guys for college potential," said Staurovsky, "All of those who participated in the Kick-Off have that potential; but each has their own strengths and weaknesses. The top three guys are the best kickers of this class and are without a doubt the top prospects, but that doesn't mean the others can't improve on their consistancy with proper physical development and practice, practice, practice." Jason will be sending a personal written evaluation to each kicker along with training suggestions to help them towards their goals. The Transition Camp is tenatively scheduled for mid-December, dates and times TBA. Perfect Practice Athletic Center offers baseball and softball instruction, place kicker instruction with former NFL kicker Jason Staurovsky, Quarterback receiver instruction with Talons QB John Fitzgerald, lineman instruction with Bruce McClure of OU and the Georgia Force of the AFL; basketball instruction with former TU great Marcus Hill. PPAC is also home to Faster Athlete Athletic Development Specialists, where athletes from 8-Professional can develop speed, agility and the explosive power all athletes need under the instruction of degreed, certified Athletic Development Specialist Josh Reed. Adult fitness and personal training are also available. Trial sessions can be scheduled by calling 764-9175.
