Last summer, Denton Campbell, 15, was embarking on one of the most exciting times of his life - high school - when an unexpected detour threatened to stop him before he even got off to a good start.
In September, the Broughton High School freshman was diagnosed with a non-canceous brain tumor called an Arterial Vessel Malformation (AVM) which brought his exciting expectations of high school to a grinding halt.
He had a full craniotomy and surgery to remove the tumor over Thanksgiving, but just weeks after surgery, he was back in class, maintaining a 3.7 GPA and preparing for spring sports. He was worried his recovery had hampered his physical fitness, but he went out for baseball anyway, and made Broughton's JV team as a designated hitter and utility player in the field.
This summer, he scored the positions of catcher and outfielder, and is batting .500 in Broughton summer league action. He recently earned his first degree Black Belt in mixed martial arts and is dreaming of making the varsity baseball team next year.
