Eastern Eagles Football Preview

Greater Louisville, KY

Wednesday, July 30, 2008

Former Eagles' quarterback Steven Ferguson is gone, leaving this year's team with a big void to be filled. Ferguson threw for 1,179 yards and 14 TDs and only 6 picks. He also ran for 1,074 yards and 12 TDs. Without him, the Eagles will have to find a new offense. Sr. Brent Carneal might just be the man for the job. Carneal will replace the 3-year starter at quarterback while Jr. Chris Parks and Sr. Justin Davis split time at running back. Davis is also the reigning state wrestling champ at the 135-lb class. Defensively, Eagles' seniors Marcus Jenkins, Kerry Kearschner and Jon Davies will anchor a returning all-star cast. Newcomers will be Sophomores Joe Kenn (QB/DB), Iyadeh Davies (RB/DB) and Jason Robinson (OL/DL). Soph. Jon Davis (6'4, 215) was 1st Team All-district at OLB last year after a phenomenal freshman campaign. Big losses for Eastern last year included a 48-12 drubbing by Trinity and a 27-13 collapse against Ballard in the first round of the playoffs. But the Eagles had huge wins too; one of their biggest being a 23-22 dogfight over Ballard at Ballard just before the playoffs. If Eastern can pull together and play their best ball in the playoffs, the Eagles might be on their way to a Cinderella semi-final run or even better.
