Mayor Mike Dow presents a key to the city to Jake Peavy, who is a former standout player for the Mobile BayBears and is now a stan
Former high school standout, pitcher Jake Peavy, continues his winning ways. Annouced on Thursday, Peavy's latest triumph...unanimously winning the National League Cy Young Award, given to the most outstanding pitcher. Peavy graduated from St. Paul's Episcopal School in Alabama. While he was there he posted a 44-1 record through his four seasons. This season, he led the National League in just about every pertinent category in 2007 -- victories (19), ERA (2.54), strikeouts (240) and strikeouts per nine innings (9.67). Peavy also started the All-Star Game in July in San Francisco.
Finishing second in the Cy Young this year was Brandon Webb. Webb played his high school ball at Paul G. Blazer High School in Ashland, Kentucky and graduated in 1997. From there he went on to star for the Kentucky Wildcats and then on to the bigs. In 2006, he was the winner of the Cy Young and has since formed a charity called the K Foundation. With the K Foundation, he has "Brandon's Locker". "Brandon's Locker" enriches the lives of ill children by providing them with welcome gifts and the use of age appropriate, medically sound mobile interactive electronics consisting of notebook computers, DVD players, i-pods and Leap Frog Learning Systems, as well as games, books and toys. During treatment and recovery, these patients are able to enjoy these interactive electronics, games, books and toys...all available in "Brandon's Locker".
Former Broken Arrow (OK) High School ace, Brad Penny has seated himself as one of the premier pitchers in the country. Finishing third in the Cy Young voting this year, Penny helped solidify the pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was an outstanding pitcher for the Broken Arrow Tigers where he was an All-Metro and All-State selection and Frontier Conference Pitcher of the Year.
Others placing the Cy Young race include:
Aaron Harang – he was a 1996 graduate from Patrick Henry High School in San Diego (CA).
Cole Hamels – he was a 2002 graduate of Rancho Bernardo High School (CA).
John Smoltz - Graduated from Waverly High School in Lansing, MI, where he was an All-State selection in both baseball and basketball.
